Nowadays probably no one can imagine the Christmas without holiday tree and carols. However does anyone know where did those traditions have their beginning?
The tradition of Christmas tree
The history of holiday tree comes from Germany. In the 16th century German Christians brought into their homes the decorated trees. Somebody was built wooden pyramids and decked them with candles and evergreens. Candles was hunged on a holiday tree by Martin Luther in the 16th century too. Inspiration for candles arised during walk. Martin Luther one December evening saw light of stars twinkling amidst evergreens.
Holiday tree in culture of the USA
It’s worth to know that majority of 19th century residents of America found holiday trees as oddity. One of the first information about holiday tree in that region come from 1830s and say about German settlers as a owners of holiday tree. Some say that the Pennsylvania German settlements had Christmas trees as early as 1747. But, as late as the 1840s holiday trees were treated as pagan symbols and they were not approved by majority of Americans.
The history of carols
The definition of „carol” in fact means dance or a song of joy and praise. In the past carols were pagan songs those were sung at the Winter Solstice celebrations when members of event danced around stone circles. Early Christians inspired pagan customs and gave Christian songs. In 129 the song „Angel’s Hymn” was known and played at a Christmas celebrations in Italy. Other Christmas hymn was created in 760 by Comas from Jerusalem. Then many composers all over the Europe started creating holiday carols. But majority of carols was sung in Latin and that’s why many Christians were not intrested in singing Christmas songs.
